D.T

DT in Key Stage 1 aims to teach children the processes of designing, making and evaluating using a range of products and a variety of technical knowledge. They use a broad choice of materials such as cardboard, plastic, fabric, wood and thread, as well as a range of tools such as scissors, glue, sellotape, needles and saws in order to create products which are relevant to their topic-based, learning. They frequently evaluate their own designs as well as pre-existing products, and comment on whether they are fit for purpose.

In Key Stage 2 DT is undertaken as an ‘interactive process’, whereby children take action and clarify their own understanding through ‘doing’; they make changes based on what they have done and what has or hasn’t worked. They explore and evaluate a range of existing products as well as create their own within relevant contexts that are meaningful, topic related and have an authentic starting point. During the design process they make annotated sketches or diagrams. The products they create often have a specific target in mind and are evaluated in light of how suitable they are for their intended user. The aesthetics of products, as well as their function, are also considered. As well as this, they consider the impact of designs and materials; whether they are sustainable and how new innovations in design change the way we live today.

Across the school we create, plan, prepare and cook dishes using a heat source and use a variety of techniques including peeling, chopping, slicing, grating, mixing, spreading, kneading and baking. We make a wide variety of sweet and savoury dishes and wherever possible use produce that is grown on the school grounds.

3 DT projects per year are undertaken in each year group with the hope that there will be a progression in skills throughout their time at school. In KS1 mechanisms, structures, food and textiles are covered. In KS2 mechanisms, structures, food, textiles, electrical systems and programming are all covered. At least one DT project is linked to an existing designer and their body of work is discussed and evaluated.
