Geography

The nature of Geography is to investigate people and places and their intra and interdependence. It begins with a child’s immediate locality and expands across a widening range of scales. The object is to develop the child’s knowledge and understanding about people and places through geographical questioning, fieldwork and mapping skills.

Geography teaching offers opportunities to:

  • stimulate children’s interest in their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical conditions on the Earth’s surface
  • foster children’s sense of wonder at the beauty of the world around them;
  • help children to develop an informed concern about the quality of the environment and the future of the human habitat
  • Thereby enhance children’s sense of responsibility for the care of the Earth and its people.

Geography is taught in a variety of ways at Queen’s Crescent. Where possible the geography themes will be taught through the school’s thematic approach. This will result in geography being linked to and taught through various other subject areas, such as English, ICT, and Maths. Geography is taught following a rolling programme so the children will not repeat a theme. The themes will have either a local, global, or environmental focus and will develop one or more of the children’s enquiry, fieldwork or mapping skills.

To support our Geography teaching we use a range of maps, atlases and internet maps including Google Earth. We visit many local surroundings, landmarks and places of interest to support Geography topics and the children’s understanding of the world around them.

We have an established link with Jamisa school in The Gambia as well as links with a Spanish school. Through communication via emails, letters, skype and blogging the children are able to develop an awareness and understanding of other places and cultures in our world. We also welcome parents from other places as a fantastic resource for teaching and learning about the wider world.
