At Queen’s Crescent School we believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to develop their musical potential. We aim to give stimulating and meaningful opportunities to explore the musical elements of performing, appraising, composing, transcribing and listening. We encourage links with other curriculum areas and provide musical activities throughout the year that support pupils musical learning linked to the new curriculum. A specialist music teacher leads music class lessons and we also have other talented musicians on our teaching staff.
We have a fantastic KS2 school choir who take part in local events. We won the ‘Last Choir Standing’ competition, held in Chippenham between local schools, on two occasions and were also runners up in the Wiltshire Choir of the Year in 2014.
We took the choir once again to the Young Voices Concert in Birmingham in January 2017. Yet again the children had an amazing time.
Young Voices is an annual event held in different venues across England. School choirs from all over the country get together to form the biggest children’s choir in the country and possibly the world! Our children will be singing with thousands of other children as well as with some well known singing stars!
Our choir took part in a workshop with members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. They have been learning songs written especially for a mini opera which they will be taking part in next term at the Neeld Hall in Chippenham along with children from other schools.
We have a drumming teacher who comes into school once a week to teach children privately and our music teacher teaches recorder to groups of children. We are currently looking into giving opportunities for children to learn a brass instrument.
Pupils have the opportunity to take part in a number of concerts and shows throughout the school year.
FS2 and KS1 perform a Christmas show each year for parents and KS2 perform in a carol service at Ladyfield Church.
Another highlight is our year 3 and 4 play. The children have performed in plays such as ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate factory.’
Our year 5 and 6 children perform a ‘leavers’ show near the end of the school year. These have been a huge success and have included ‘Grease,’ ‘Wicked’ and ‘Bugsy Malone.’
Boomwhacker Fun Year 2
KAKATSITSI
Kakatsitsi are a West African drumming and dancing group who came to our school to perform to the children in assembly and then work with year 1 and 2 in drumming workshops.
A year 6 child said, “That was the best assembly I have ever seen!”
The children in year 1 and 2 had a fantastic time drumming and dancing.
