QUEEN’S CRESCENT SCHOOL
P.E. POLICY
Rationale
In Queen’s Crescent School we recognise the need for children to develop their physical competence in a regular balanced programme, involving the areas of dance, games, gymnastics, swimming (Y3/Y4), athletics and outdoor/adventurous activity. We encourage the children to become independent learners and performers, planning and evaluating their own work. We aim to develop their control, balance, agility, co-ordination, teamwork, awareness and appreciation of quality in movement.
Aims and Objectives
Through the Chris Quigley Essentials curriculum we want children to show a range of characteristics:
- To acquire new knowledge to help them progress in PE
- The willingness to have a go
- High levels of physical fitness
- A healthy lifestyle
- To stay physically active for a sustained amount of time
- To take initiative in their PE learning
- To have originality, imagination and creativity in their range of movements
- To have a keen interest in PE and…
- To have fun!
Approaches to Teaching
The children will develop these skills through a combination of full class, grouped, paired and individual activities, both indoors and outdoors (when appropriate). We use the LCP teaching manuals to deliver the majority of the curriculum. However, we feel it is important to step out of this framework to allow for greater flexibility for teachers and pupils alike.
External support 2013-20
Through government funding (Sport Premium) Queen’s Crescent have employed Paul Harvey to support our staff and children in outdoor PE sessions. He will work closely with teachers to plan and deliver high quality activities thus improving staff’s knowledge and confidence of outdoor activities. He will also work with lunchtime staff to promote quality play that engages children with these staff. This funding was initially available until 2015, but has since been extended until 2020.

Assessment
The school’s assessment policy gives a detailed account of how assessment is carried out in the school. Assessments are carried out through teacher core tasks, focused observations, questioning of the children, review of the children’s work. Staff inform parents at parents’ evenings and through the annual reports.
Extended Opportunities for PE
The school offers a range of OSHL (out of school hours learning) for P.E. There are some paid-for clubs run by outside agencies and many staff led clubs during some terms such as football, netball, running, cricket and Country Dancing. There is also a girls’ only football lunch time club on a Monday run by coaches from Stanley Park. As well as this, KS2 children can also participate in many sporty activities during Friday Enrichment afternoons. To extend gifted and talented children, our G&T Leader is able to organise extension opportunities through links with secondary schools. Additionally, the Sainsbury’s School Games run every year which many children are invited to qualify for in different sporting areas.
Equal opportunities
All children will have an equal opportunity to work within this policy area. Account will be taken of their needs and where appropriate support for them will be accessed through the special needs policy. One of our successes in this area is our involvement with Boccia. We have regularly attended competitions, invited coaches in to work with classes and there is an on-going lunchtime club each week. In the past we have also been able to use some of our Sports Premium funding for an after school club that is designed to reach those children who find PE the trickiest.
Roles and responsibilities
This policy has been developed through consultation between staff and between the subject leader, head teacher and governing body. The head teacher, deputy and subject leader monitor and evaluate the work achieved by the children in this area. The leader identifies areas for development, resource needs and helps in the moderation of standards across the school. The leader works with the linked subject governor so that they are aware of such issues. The leader also liaises with the link governor about their visits to school. The linked governor will also keep the governing body informed about developments in this area.

Link Governor – Sheila Copeman
Sports coach – Paul Harvey
Monitoring and evaluation
The monitoring and evaluation of the achievements made in this area of the curriculum is carried out through the guidelines on monitoring and evaluation. These set out how the head teacher, deputy head and leader use a range of strategies to assess the quality of achievements. The class teachers however, have a key role in monitoring and evaluation of their work and that of the children in their class. The Headteacher works with the governing body to inform them about the work carried out within the school. The periodic reports either through the Wiltshire School Improvement programme’ or OFSTED inspections give independent and outside views on the standards achieved within the subject area.
Additional Information to support the P.E. Policy
The government is investing £8000 for every primary school in England with 16 or more children on roll, plus a further £5 per child between the ages of 5-11. Their aim is to increase quality PE across the country by allowing schools to invest their money in coaches/resources etc to create a sustainable environment within schools.
Queen’s Crescent is part of the Devizes School Sports Co-ordinator partnerships. This is a large ‘family’ of 17 primary and 3 secondary schools from Chippenham, linked together with the Devizes School as the centre. Mike Rose is the partnership development leader (PDL). The Chippenham area schools have been split into teams with each secondary school at the centre. Queen’s Crescent is part of the Sheldon team along with Monkton Park, Frogwell, By Brook Valley, Stanton St Quinton and Seagry. Selina Porter is the School Sports Co-ordinator (SSCo) and is based at Sheldon School.
